Kenya
CURRENT NEED:
Dear friends,
Once again receive greetings from Kenya, East Africa in the saving name of our lord Jesus Christ.
For the last two months it has been raining heavily in Kenya and rivers have burst out everywhere with flooding. This has left about 600 families homeless and over 120 people dead. Properties worth millions are destroyed and the many homeless are without food or shelter.
At Bala Mercy Children’s Centre there are around 100 people camping at the orphanage, many of them hosted orphaned children in their homes. The Children’s Centre is in urgent need of supplies. For $6 you can provide a personal size mosquito net for the children and flood victims staying at Bala Mercy.
Please pray for the affected families. God bless all of you.
Yours in Christ,
Reverend Domnic O. Ochoo

Programs:
Community Clinics - orphanCare International works with Reverend Ochoo in Kenya to support several programs. Donations for the community clinics help employ a nurse and a visiting doctor and provide medical supplies for members of the surrounding areas. We are still working to establish clinics across Kenya.

Feeding the Hungry - Over the past few years food prices in Kenya have soared. Our program in Kisumu feeds 50 to 70 at-risk children two meals daily. Most of these children have no family to care for them and live on the streets. Reverend Ochoo said that this program is very fragile since it depends on having the funds to purchase food. At times the program managers beg for leftovers from area restaurants.

Supporting the Children - orphanCare International helps support five orphanages in Kenya. Each orphanage supports between 150 and 500 children as well as a school to offer the children an education. Most of these facilities are lacking classrooms or dining halls and need regular funding for meals and staff wages.

There is also a need for funding for a vocational training program for children over the age of 13 and a home for abandoned children. To rent a facility of the size needed for an abandoned children's home would cost about $450 a month or between $65,000 to $70,000 to purchase a facility.

Orphanages: Bala Mercy Orphanage, Word of Hope Orphanage, Olando Children's Care Centre, Word Aflame Orphanage and Kuria Mission Orphanage

Schools: Bala Mercy Primary School, Down House High School and Word Aflame School

Child Sponsorships - Children at Bala Mercy Orphanage in Kenya depend on caring sponsors to help them pay for daily necessities such as clothes and food, as well as their education and medical care. If you are interested in becoming a sponsor contact Caitlin at (918) 749-4600 x210 or by email.

A few facts:

  • Two in every three children born in Kenya die before reaching age five.
  • Malnutrition affects around one in every three children
  • 70% of the population in rural areas have no access to clean, safe water
  • Only one in four children go to secondary school
  • Over 2,000,000 people (almost 15% of the population) in Kenya are living with HIV/AIDS--1,500,000 children are orphaned by aids
  • Many people in Kenya are barely surviving as they live well below the poverty line. By offering desperately needed educations to the children in Kenya Dillon provides them with a way out of this lifestyle. Tuition, books and two meals a day are given to each child who attends the Bala Mercy School. In addition, we are also trying to provide each child with uniforms.
